POSITION:                   Parks Maintenance Worker I

SALARY:                      $29.97 per hour plus 14% in lieu of benefits (July 2024 rates)

CLASSIFICATION:        JA05 – Park Maintenance I

HOURS OF WORK:      Shift coverage and project work, on call bases.  4–8-hour including mornings and weekends.

SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, the position performs maintenance of landscape and assists in the development and maintenance of fields, lawn bowling areas, park and facilities.  Prepares and cares for grounds, playing fields surfaces required for various sporting events.

 

JOB DUTIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Maintain landscape areas, including fertilizing, mowing and watering lawns, planting, weeding and pruning garden areas (seasonally dependent).
  • Maintain trails, including clearing overgrown areas, leaf clearing, cleaning culverts and ditches, sign posting and repairs.
  • Assist in the construction and repairs in golf course, lawn bowls, park and golf areas.
  • Operates small power tools and equipment such as push lawnmowers, weed eaters, chain saws and pickup trucks.
  • Enforce Park regulations; provide helpful information to park and golf users.
  • Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner and meets parks standards and regulations.
  • Assist other park crews when directed.
  • Operates equipment necessary to complete all tasks.
  • Participate in weekly yard and shop clean up and washing of vehicles.
  • Performs other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduation preferably supplemented by completion of technical courses related to park operations.
  • One-year equivalence of work experience in a golf course and parks setting is required, with a demonstrated interest in parks work.
  • A valid BC driver’s license.
  • Physically fit and able to perform a wide variety of heavy manual outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate various hand tools and motorized equipment.
  • BC Pesticide applicator’s certificate and First Aid/CPR certificate would be an asset.
