Pearson College UWC is recruiting for an outstanding IBDP Mathematics and Economics Teacher.

Reporting to: Deputy Head of College – Academics

Position Summary:

Pearson College UWC is seeking a teacher with a strong academic and practical teaching background in Mathematics and Economics to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP) Mathematics and Economics courses. The IB Mathematics and Economics courses are designed to accommodate the range of needs, interests, and abilities of students while fulfilling university and career aspirations. Students are encouraged to appreciate the international dimensions of mathematics and economics and its cultural and historical perspectives.

The successful candidate will be able to teach IBDP Mathematics: analysis and approaches and Mathematics: applications and Interpretation at Standard Level (SL) and Economics at SL and Higher Level. The ability to teach Mathematics: analysis and approaches at HL is an asset. Expertise and interest in teaching Theory of Knowledge (TOK) would be considered an asset. The candidate must be eligible to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

• Model and encourage the Pearson College UWC mission and values, promoting peace, international understanding, and sustainable development through education.
• Create a welcoming, respectful environment – inside and outside the classroom – in which students can thrive physically, socially, emotionally, and academically, where students feel safe to take risks and learn from their experiences.
• Deliver high-quality instruction in Mathematics and Economics Courses: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at SL and HL with high, but appropriate expectations for the progress and achievement of all students. Contribute to teaching IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK).  
• Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of students, aligning instruction with their university and career aspirations.
• Encourage students to explore the global dimensions of mathematics and appreciate its cultural and historical contexts.
• Contribute to the Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) program as a CAS leader. Expertise and certification in areas such as sailing, paddling, hiking, or other outdoor experiential activities are particularly valued.
• Foster an inclusive and supportive environment for a diverse student body representing over 90 countries, including students from potentially challenging backgrounds.
• Collaborate with colleagues to support students’ academic, personal, and social development.
• Actively participate in campus events, extracurricular programs, committees, and community engagement initiatives.
• Stay informed about best practices in teaching and learning, particularly within the IB framework.
• Maintain accurate student records and ensure compliance with teaching and safety standards.

Skills and Preferred Experience

• A master’s degree in one or both mathematics and economics is preferred; however, we will consider candidates holding a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, or a related field, who have an exemplary background in teaching.
• Proven teaching experience of students aged 16 – 19.
• Familiarity with the IBDP curriculum or comparable advanced academic programs for high school students.
• Demonstrated leadership in CAS activities, particularly in experiential programs such as sailing, waterfront activities, or outdoor education.
• International teaching experience or the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students from around the world, including those from challenging backgrounds.
• A passion for teaching highly motivated 16- to 19-year-old students while fostering their holistic development.
• Willingness to engage actively in community life, including boarding school living and extracurricular activities, an interest in living on campus and/or being a House Parent is an advantage
• Ability to advise small student groups, offering personal and academic support.
• Applicants are encouraged to highlight their qualifications and experience teaching other IBDP courses.
• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a British Columbia Class Four driver’s license.
• Enthusiasm for working closely with students and fostering a vibrant learning environment beyond the classroom.

Compensation & Organization

This is a full-time, 3-year fixed-term position, running from August 2025 to July 2028. The position is based at Pearson College UWC in Metchosin, British Columbia, approximately 40 minutes from downtown Victoria. Compensation for this position is based on qualifications, experience, and the current collective agreement salary scale ranges from $59,887 to $107,077.
